Tele-medicine service being offered by Apollo is becoming popular
with the VLEs. Throughout India, a very encouraging number of
consultations have been received for the month of November especially
from States like Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra
Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.
The number of consultations has seen a manifold increase of more than 760% in November, as compared to August.

Healthcare is the right of every Individual but lack of quality
infrastructure, dearth of medical facilities thwarts its reach to the
rural population. The key challenges in this case are lack of awareness
and limited access to facilities. Thus, there is a need for affordable
health services for the low income rural population. This can be done by
the use of the available robust IT technologies and services available
under Common Service Centers.
In the recent years there has been significant growth in Information
Technology. The internet has also transformed clinical care. IT
interventions and consultations are being introduced rapidly and on a
large scale across health care. Telemedicine will usher a new light
towards achieving the target of reaching out the benefits of IT at the
grassroots level at a much larger pace. These days, Technology has
reached such robustness, that it is just waiting to be embraced.
We, at our CSCs, aim to offer the much required health services via
the power, reach and utility of technology, assess and highlight the
need for health based interventions, and provide insight for possible
solutions. We aim to not only heal the people, but also help increase
their awareness about health, making way for a healthier and more aware
individual and collectively, the whole nation.
Our services include Telemedicine, Tele-ophthalmology,
Tele-homeopathy, Diagnostic services, Awareness building of the rural
population and more. One of the prominent rural services in the area of
health sector is providing consultation through telemedicine services,
whose ICT requirement is fully mapped with the centers. Telemedicine
makes it possible to connect health specialists from one end of the
world, to patients in the remotest corners – anywhere and anytime. The
Common Service Centers, or CSCs, are using telemedicine to provide
expert health services to millions of Indians in the remotest parts of
the country.

India is a land of two worlds in relation to health care services to
its people. On one end of the spectrum we have cutting edge technology,
advancements in clinical sciences, skill sets among the medical
fraternity to perform some of the most complex health interventions and
procedures, making India a health care destination for even some of the
developed countries. On the other end of the spectrum we have needless
mortality due lack of service provisioning in some remote parts of the
country. The public health system has been striving to address this
challenge of health care service provisioning to such difficult
geographies but they are plagued by inherent challenges of scarcity of
medical professionals, incentive and motivation for such skilled
resources to provide their services in such locations. The estimated
doctor population ratio in India is 0.7: 10002 compared to Global
average of 1.4, we have a deficit of almost 2.8 Lakh Doctors similarly
there is a need for almost 23,00,000 paramedical work force to meet the
health care service requirements of the Country.
Apollo Tele-Ophthalmology services has signed a partnership agreement
with the Common Services Centers Scheme of the Government of India to
enable Primary opinion services through tele consultations for eye
realted diseases to CSCs in the Country. The primary objective of the
collaborative partnership is to provide grass root level access points
for Health Literacy among the communities, develop health seeking
behaviour and to promote preventive health care services among the rural
populace.

Blindness Scenario in India: There are 37 million people blind in the world. 1/3rd of these blind people live in India. 80% of blindness is avoidable (cataract and refractive errors). Majority of the blind live in rural areas, while most of the eye care services and facilities are available in urban areas.
Venu has developed a unique 3-tier service delivery network, in response to the felt need of the patient, to ensure quality eye care services reach the poor and needy in the rural areas. It has a tertiary Base Referral & Teaching Hospital in Delhi, 5 rural secondary level Satellite Hospitals and 14 primary level Vision Centres in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. It organizes 500 eye screening camps.
Since its inception Venu has treated 6.5 million patients and operated 0.42 million.
50% of patients are treated free.
Income generated from the 50% paying patients subsidize the 50% free patients.

effectiveness of diagnostic and management decision by
tele-ophthalmology using indigenous equipment in comparison with
in-clinic assessment of patients’.
The study found that the efficacy and sensitivity were comparable to tele-ophthalmic diagnosis reported from other worldwide studies.
It is based on the results of this study that the CSC project was conceived.
The Tele-ophthalmology project is a path-breaking new venture that marries technology and expertise with compassion, via a revolutionary self-sustaining model.
Conceived by the team at Venu, and under execution in collaboration with the Departments of Science & Technology and Information Technology, Government of India, this project promises to revolutionise the field of accessible eye care in India.
Currently, we are conducting it as a controlled pilot project wherein 10 Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs) are being trained to enable them to add e-health services at the Common Service Centres that they are already managing, under the Government of India’s e-governance initiative.
Once executed with success in the pilot stage, this project will be replicated across the country.
